Q: My bedroom closet could really use a makeover. Do you have any tips?
A: Many people begin and end the day rummaging through the closet; yet the space itself is often overlooked. Would you describe your closet as messy, disorganized or difficult to navigate? If so, you may be overlooking some designs, tactics and clever storage ideas that can transform your ordinary closet into one that’s both functional and beautiful.
The process towards a better closet begins with a little bit of cleaning. Take inventory of everything you own and feel free to throw out clutter that you no longer need. Next, you’ll want to devise a storage strategy that uses all available space. Leave no square inch unused! Try installing carousels, pullout shelves or corner hangings to maximize the space. Or take advantage of cabinetry pieces to increase storage capacity.
Now it’s time to get a little creative! Use vertically hung hooks or shadow boxes to display accessories. If you have a little extra space in your closet, a clothing island might be the perfect place to store extra shoes or clothing. Mirrors are great additions to any closet. Hang them on the walls to give the illusion of space, or you can install a full-length pullout mirror that tucks behind your clothing.
Lighting inside the closet is hugely important. Proper lights can transform the space and perk up everything inside. To save space, investigate recessed lighting options, or install a chandelier for an elegant, unexpected touch. There are even clothing rods with built-in LED lights available on the market today.
Just because you are working with limited space doesn’t mean you can’t have a fantastic, functional closet. Analyze the space you have available, and make an organization plan from there.
