Q: How can I use Feng Shui in my kitchen renovation

A: Signifying the art of living in harmony, Feng Shui is rooted in ancient wisdom and philosophy of China. In compliance with living principles and ancient wisdom, this prehistoric school of thought believes in creating a flow of positive energy, which is harmonious for living spaces. And yes, there are many ways you can use Feng Shui in your kitchen. The key is in understanding its applications in the home.

A Balancing Act

Feng Shui (pronounced as Fung Shway) has for years been sweeping through into American homes as North American families learn about other cultures and globalization makes it easier to see what others do around the world.  It has come a long way to be recognized as a relevant science in today’s lifestyle. It applies to offices, homes, businesses and any other dwelling. It’s based on the principles of balancing energies connected with nature and environment. Feng Shui attempts to create a positive flow of force to impact in your prime areas of life.

Tips on Balancing Your Kitchen

When planning your renovation, consider these Feng Shui principles:

  • Don’t position a kitchen directly below or adjacent to a bathroom.
  • Don’t place a kitchen in the center of the home
  • Don’t place the kitchen stove on the same slab as the sink.
  • Keep water and fire elements separate from each other—for example, keep the refrigerator away from the stove (not adjacent to it).
  • Use green as a kitchen color to attract Chi (positive energy).
  • Don’t clutter the kitchen with unused articles—use the “Have-I-used-it-in-a-year” test to determine whether it belongs in the kitchen or not.

In your home, the kitchen is one of the most important features of a home in respect to the principles of Feng Shui; the Chinese even treat the kitchen stove as the source of health and prosperity.  While you certainly do not have to implement each principle in your renovation, there are plenty of principles to choose from!
